Making a mindfulness glitter jar is a great activity for the whole family. The jar can help children and adults feel relaxed, reflect on their thoughts and explore what mindfulness is.
Here’s how we make Mindfulness Glitter Jars!
Our minds are so powerful! When we feel a negative emotion it doesn’t only affect our hearts, but it affects our minds as well. Our minds get full and all of our thoughts start to bounce around with no way to get out.
Glitter jars can help us settle our minds.
Once our jars are made, we can tip them upside down or shake them. When we feel a strong emotion our minds become like the glitter swirling around the jar.
However, the glitter will eventually settle. In the same way, our emotions will pass. As we watch the glitter slowly making its way down to the bottom, we let our bodies relax. We can remind ourselves that our minds will also calm down after they have been “shaken”.
Material
First things first we’ll need to gather our equipment!
What you’ll need:
- Empty Jam Jar
- Warm Water
- Clear Glue
- Glitter
Let’s start making some glitter jars!

Step 1: Work Station!
To start off, lay a tablecloth or sheet down to make cleaning up really easy. We suggest you wear a T-shirt or apron, one that can get covered in glitter!
Step 2: Glue!
Secondly, you will have to pour glue into the jar, until the glue fills the jar half way. Add some warm water to fill it up until the jar is about 3/4 full.
Step 3: Glitter!
Now is the time for glitter!! Try adding a combination of colours and see how that looks!

Step 4: Shake!
Remember to put the lid on before you SHAKE!!! Then sit your jar down, and get ready to look at how beautiful the glitter is as it falls slowly down the jar. Maybe you could try some breathing exercises whilst watching the glitter!
You can decorate the lid and jar however you would like. Remember that you want to be able to see the glitter though!
We would love to see how you guys get on with making your mindfulness jars, make sure to use the hashtag #citywiseglitterjars on instagram, facebook or twitter!
